THE WARDROBE EDIT · 01

Fewer pieces.
More possibilities.

A considered wardrobe begins with clothes that work together. Start with navy, ecru, stone and brown. Add interest through texture and proportion rather than a prominent logo.

Seven foundations

The light shirt. An Oxford-style shirt offers structure; linen gives a more relaxed finish. White or pale blue works with both dark trousers and lighter summer separates. The collar should sit comfortably when fastened.
The knitted polo. A simple collar and a subtle knit texture make an easy alternative to a T-shirt. Choose navy, cream or a muted earthy tone. The sleeve should follow your arm without gripping it.
The fine knit. A crew neck or half-zip adds a useful layer. Wear it over a shirt, or on its own when comfortable. Avoid pulling at the chest or excess fabric bunching around the waist.
The straight trouser. Stone or navy is a versatile starting point. Aim for room through the seat and thigh, with a clean fall over the shoe. Sitting down should feel as comfortable as standing up.
The unstructured blazer. A softer jacket can sharpen a simple outfit. Check the shoulders first: a seam that drops too far down the arm can make the whole jacket look oversized.
The simple outer layer. A restrained bomber or coat works over your everyday pieces. Try it with the layers you actually wear. You should be able to reach forward without the back pulling tight.
The understated shoe. A brown loafer complements stone and navy; a simple dark shoe suits cooler weather. Consider width as well as length. A shoe should feel secure without squeezing your toes.

Three looks to start with

An easy weekend: cream knitted polo, stone trousers and brown loafers. Keep the colours close and let the knit add texture.

A considered working day: pale blue shirt, navy trousers and a soft blazer. Leave enough room under the jacket for the shirt to sit smoothly.

A relaxed evening: navy fine knit, lighter trousers and a simple coat or bomber. One dark layer against a lighter base gives the outfit definition.

Fit before the label

Use your usual size as a starting point, then check the guide on the product page. General size references are approximate. When garment measurements are available, compare them with a similar piece you already enjoy wearing. Do not compare a flat garment width directly with your full body circumference.

Look for a clean shoulder line, sleeves that finish near the wrist and a waistband that sits comfortably without relying on a tight belt. If you are between sizes, think about whether you prefer a closer fit or room for a layer.

Look closely, then decide

Read the fabric composition and care instructions for the individual piece. Use close-up images to assess texture and details rather than assuming that every knit or every shirt uses the same material. Once your order arrives, check the fit indoors before wearing it out.

Arthur Mayfair offers a 30-day return window after receipt for unused items in their original packaging. Check the current returns policy for the full process.

One final rule: add a piece only when you can picture at least three ways to wear it with what you already own.
